![]() After a while, other emulation targets were added to bsnes, so its name was deemed inaccurate, and byuu renamed it to higan. It mentions that they were doing his friends as well, with one supposedly committing suicide which hit Near hard. bsnes was originally a SNES emulator, with the goal of being as accurate as possible. Imagine having to try to disassociate yourself from your life's work because the first thing that turns up when they google you is a thread of people mocking the way you look, sexuality, or mental state. The highly respected developer known as Near, creator of emulators like bsnes, higan and more has died. Near (previously known as Byuu) has been allegedly confirmed by close friends and authorities to have passed away. Near would have to literally stop using internet for them to be unable to reach him, but that also could not stop them. Please remember people, online harassment has real life consequences. Or rather as the article in the source says, was killed by KiwiFarms. The Nintendo 8-bit cores are very early in development, and are inferior to other existing emulators alternatives include Gambatte, BGB, Mesen, puNES, and Nestopia. higan's bsnes and bgba cores are its most developed/accurate. Please don't bother going to the site to look at it, don't give them the clicks. Near, known for developping bsnes and higan, both well-known accurate emulators, has commited suicide after suffering online harassment for a long time from KiwiFarms. higan is a project that originally separated from Near's previous SNES emulator bsnes when more system cores were added. They didn't "do" much, but I think knowing they were constantly watching his every move, and the fact he didn't have many real-life friends, meant that they boxed him into a corner on the internet which was the only real space he felt he could be himself.īefore he died he offered to give the Kiwifarms owner everything, all his money, his ID, his talents - if he just locked the thread, but instead he just gave him smarmy replies. He tried changing his name three or four times, but they basically have a thread where they would try to uncover who he was, what he was doing, what groups he was communicating with. They were a colossal force in emulation and will be missed.Because he was an easy target, he was sensitive, his work gave him a larger online profile than he had the mental tools to cope with. Seems like their death was related to relentless targeted harassment and mental health issues which is sad and unfortunate. Chances are if you use an emulator to play retro games, you're running some of their code. ![]() "Near" is the author behind the popular (and super notably cycle accurate) Bsnes/Higan/Ares emulators and contributed code to just about every modern emulator covering the 8-16 bit era.
